Irregular pit placement for dithering images by self-occlusion

چکیده

We propose a complete system for designing, simulating, and fabricating surfaces with shading due to self-occlusion that induce desired input images. Our work is based on a simple observation. Consider a cylindrical hole (a pit) in a planar surface. As the depth of the hole increases, the radiance emitted from the surface patch that contains the hole decreases. This is because more light is trapped and absorbed in the hole. First, we propose a measurement-based approach that derives a mapping between average albedo of the surface patch containing the hole and the hole depth. Given this mapping and an input image, we show how to produce a distribution of holes with varied depth that approximates the image well. We demonstrate that by aligning holes with image features, while still maintaining an irregular distribution, we can obtain reproductions that look better than those resulting from regular hole patterns—despite using less holes. We validate this method on a variety of images and corresponding surfaces fabricated with a computer-controlled milling machine and a 3D printer. & 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Clinical usefulness of magnifying endoscopy for non-ampullary duodenal tumors

Study aims This study aimed to investigate the clinical usefulness of magnifying endoscopy (ME) for non-ampullary duodenal tumors. Patients and methods We enrolled 103 consecutive patients with non-ampullary duodenal tumors that were observed by ME with narrow-band imaging (ME-NBI) and had pit pattern analysis before endoscopic resection at Hiroshima University Hospital before December 2014. ME...

Analysis of Large-scale Displacement Using Radar Interferometry Technology in Open-pit Mines (Case Study: Gol Gohar Sirjan Mine)

Abstract Mines with their displacements cause damage to infrastructure and land, so it is important to control the displacement caused by mines. Also, the amount of minerals extracted from mines has always been of interest to managers. On the other hand, radar interferometry, given the production of repetitive and full images and the acceptable accuracy of this method, in examining be sugge...

Usefulness of magnifying endoscopy for diagnosing tumorous lesions of the colorectum.

The usefulness of magnifying endoscopy was assessed by examining the extent to which a magnifying endoscope can provide images of pits and by analyzing the consistency of the pit patterns visualized by magnifying endoscopy with the pit patterns visible under a stereomicroscope. Study materials consisted of 83 cases of tumorous colorectal lesions. Under a magnifying endoscope, pits were visible ...

Influence of environmental conditions on the earth pit resistance using earth pit simulator

Introduction: Electrocution is the cause of many deaths in the world annually, that electric current passing between the body and earth can be the reason; thus, it is of great importance to construct the ground protection system using earth pit. This study aimed to investigate the effective environmental conditions on the earthchr('39')s pit resistance using the simulation method. Materials an...

Solving Irregular Problems through Parallel Irregular Trees

This paper presents PIT, a library for the parallelization of irregular problems on distributed memory architectures. All the strategies underlying the definition of the library can be expressed in terms of operations on a PITree, a parallel version of the tree data structure oriented to irregular problems. We consider the application of PIT to two well known irregular problems: adaptive multig...
